About MH-AL

Massachusetts Hoisting License was founded by Rick Staples when he saw a lack of safety concerns and ways for heavy equipment operators to get licensed in Massachusetts.

Rick’s career in construction spans nearly four decades, beginning in 1986 when he first stepped into the operator’s seat of heavy equipment. What started as hands-on work in the field evolved into a deep-rooted expertise in how equipment, people, and job sites must work together safely. His early years gave him a practical, real-world perspective that continues to influence everything he does today.

By 2001, Rick shifted his focus fully toward safety, taking on roles as a crane and equipment inspector, trainer, and developer of training solutions. He has since built a reputation for translating complex safety standards into clear, actionable practices that crews can apply in the field. His work is grounded in experience—not theory—which allows him to connect with operators and inspectors at every level.

A defining moment in Rick’s career came in 2008 following the devastating tower crane collapse in New York City that resulted in multiple fatalities. In response, Rick was brought in to inspect hundreds of cranes, develop a structured inspection program, and train municipal inspectors. That experience reinforced the real-world consequences of safety failures and strengthened his commitment to raising industry standards.

Since then, Rick has continued to develop and deliver training programs that have impacted thousands of workers across the industry. His mission remains consistent: to improve safety outcomes by equipping people with the knowledge, awareness, and confidence they need to do their jobs the right way—every time.

The programs designed by Rick and his team of instructions have helped over 30,000 students pass their exams with confidence and meet all state requirements efficiently. Courses are available in multiple locations across Massachusetts, as well as online for convenience and flexibility.
