If you’re looking to get your Massachusetts Hoisting License, one of the most common questions we hear is simple:
"How does this work?"
The process is actually very straightforward, and our goal is to make it as easy and stress-free as possible so you can get licensed and get back to work.
Step 1: Choose the License(s) You Want
About 95% of our students enroll in the 2A/1C Mass Hoisting Test Prep Class, because it covers the equipment most operators use on the job.
Other students choose the 2A/1B Mass Hoisting Test Prep Class.
These combinations give most contractors and operators the flexibility they require.
Step 2: Register & Attend Test Prep Class
Our classes are designed to be efficient and focused.
- Class length: 4 hours
- Schedule: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Number of classes needed: Just one class
During the session, we walk you through exactly what you need to know to pass the state exam. The class includes:
- Workbook
- Practice quizzes
- Instructor guidance on the key test topics
- Real-world explanations that make the material easier to understand.

Step 3: Pass Guarantee
We want every student to succeed. That’s why the class comes with our Pass Guarantee. The cost for the 2A/1C class is $300, and it includes all materials and instruction. The 2A/1B is $350, and it also includes all materials and instruction.
In-Person Classes Offered
We Offer Combo-Courses:
- 2A/1C - The 2A allows operators to use excavators, loaders, and backhoes, while the 1C restriction covers telescopic booms (like lull forklifts) without wire ropes. These licenses are required for construction.
- 2A/1B - The 2A allows operators to use excavators, loaders, and backhoes, while the 1B authorizes operators to run telescopic boom cranes, including those with wire ropes (cable-controlled).
Online Courses Offered
Prefer to study on your own schedule? Massachusetts Hoisting License also offers online test prep courses and single license classes that cover the same core material taught in the classroom.
These self-paced courses are designed to help students prepare for licenses such as 2A and 1B, walking through the laws, safety requirements, equipment operation, and key topics that appear on the Massachusetts state exam. Each section typically includes practice quizzes and review modules, allowing students to study from a computer, tablet, or phone and reinforce what they’ve learned before test day.
Infrequently, a student doesn’t pass their exam and they can attend the class one additional time at no charge. In reality, this almost never happens because the preparation process is designed to give you exactly what you need to succeed. We've trained over 30,000 students!
Step 4: Apply for Your State Exam
During the class, we also walk you through how to apply for the state exam online. This step is often confusing for first-time applicants, so we make sure you understand the process before you leave.
Massachusetts Office of Public Safety charges:
- $75 per test
- Since the combo classes require two tests, the total state fee is $150 for the 2A/1C and the 2A/1B
Once you apply, the state typically takes about six weeks to schedule your test date.

Step 5: Office of Public Safety (OPSI) Schedules Your Exam

OPSI will assign your:
- Test date
- Test time
- Testing location
You don’t choose these details, the state does. But because our class prepares you for the material thoroughly, you’ll know exactly what to expect when test day arrives.
